Rajnath Singh is certainly not the first person to hold English responsible for the decline of Indian languages and, by extension, Indian culture. Knowledge of English does tend to change our work and consumption habits and the way we are. But in a globalised and intricately connected world, English is inevitable. From Europe to China, non-English- speaking people are racing to gain competency in English.
In India, adopting English had become inevitable even before the globalisation idea began. When we developed our premier institutions of higher learning using the English medium, we sent out a message that higher levels of aspiration are concurrent with English. What unites the modern workplace across north, south, east and west India is the English language. Whether in higher education or opportunities in the workplace, there is a definite disadvantage to not knowing English.
The middle class has always preferred English as a medium of schooling. Today, even small towns and villages are clamouring for schools in the English medium. Wherever low-cost private English-medium schools are available, government and non-English-medium schools are facing an exodus. Political rhetoric aside, corporation, government and aided schools have started introducing English-medium sections within their schools in response to this situation. It is a different matter altogether that most of these schools and many of the low-cost private schools are English-medium in label only, since it is practically impossible to find enough teachers with fluency in English.
1.       Who are competing to gain proficiency in English language?
2.       When had India adopted English?
3.       Why are low-cost-private schools English-medium in label only?
